Wheat Penny

In 1909 the US Mint began producing the Lincoln one cent type coins. This year was selected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birthday. It is known as the "Wheat Penny" because of the wheat stalks found on the reverse side. New York sculptor Victor David Brenner designed the coin and his initials V.D.B. can be found on the reverse side of some 1909 issues. The wheat penny design was minted until 1958 when the wheat stalks were replaced with the Lincoln Memorial in 1959 to commemorate Lincoln’s sesquicentennial.

1938 Proof Lincoln Wheat Penny - PCGS PR64RD

Awesome cherry red proof wheat penny! This is the 3rd year of proofs being resumed after a 22 year hiatus from production. This wheat penny would have easily made PR65RD if it wasn’t for a light spot near the back of Lincoln’s head. Truly and excellent example of a Type coin.
